Cenk Eroglu - Xcarnation

Interview By Dougie

The name Xcarnation and Cenk Erglou were completely unknown to me until the CD 'Grounded' land on my doormat. Would like to introduce yourself and the band ?

I do have 2 solo albums here in Turkey and produced many other albums for different artists.. and  Xcarnation Grounded is my first overseas album.. As a serions music fan Id been searching for a new band with a unique sound for a long time..  couldn’t find what I was looking for.. at least not in one band.. one bands sound was awesome but their melodies were not happening, the other bands songs were awesome but the arrangements were not original enough.. So I found myself working on that music which I had been desperately searching for.. My first connection was Pat Mastelotto and he really opened my mind ..rhythm section was one of my biggest interests and Pat is a true genius  on that.. he was one of my  dream drummers and he was a great guide for my sound choices..  Later, I got in touch with Kip Winger; another true soulful unique musician, a song writer with an amazing voice. People mostly know him from his 80’s band Winger but if you really wanna face the beast you should hear his solo albums.. So Kip and I started to work together for this project. However, as time passed, we realized that we were actually working on 2-3 different  albums at the same time.. So, we decided to categorize the songs in 3 groups.. the first project is Xcarnation; actually my solo album..  the next will be Kip’s solo album and then we will release “Istanblue” to complete this working period.. Kip is my soul twin and he is the only one with whom I feel safe and natural in the studio.

Looking at your very informative and well designed website www.xcarnation.com,  I notice you've worked on many different albums mainly with Turkish artistes (is this correct ?) How did you get involved in making music and what has been your most important release to you personally so far ?

Thanks for liking my web design.. I did it by my self.. still learning software for that...!  My grandfather has a music school and there are lots of musicians in the family and it was really natural, I had the luxury to find every instrument available and that really helped me to explore lots of instruments and at a very early age got used to the sounds n tunes... I've worked with lots of musicians that's true.. but the most important ones were BPMM with Pat & King Crimson lords.. + the Hurrem Sultan musical and now Xcarnation...  personally I always look forward and I hate what I did yesterday.. I don't think this is very healthy but :-)

Leading on, what is the music scene like in Turkey ? I've only visited the country once back in 1993 in an area called Gumbit.

It is a matrix.. out of the real world.. I hate it... !!!! lot's of great musicians but the business scene is hard to live in.. rock music here .. there are lots of metal and rock bands in Turkey ..especially in the last 4-5 years their numbers have increased, before it was more underground … I think uniqueness is the key word. Mostly the bands in Turkey are trying to imitate other internationally known bands and that’s the reason why they can’t achieve international success. But after all, I have always been a rock musician.. but was born in the wrong country.. I had to live my life as a musician and had to be a part of the popular trend that is prevalent in my country.. but it has also proved to be quite advantageous for me to be in this “Matrix” as I had the chance to develop a unique sound and affect the musical history here in Turkey like a milestone so it was kind of a mission in many ways... I guess I was kind of a pioneer...

Onto the album, I believe this is the first fruits of your collaboration with kip Winger , how did you meet ?

I emailed him and told him that I am a big fan of his music and told him that I’d like to send him my custom samples ... he emailed me back with a great positive vibe then I sent him the stuff together with my music ..later we became fans of each other..

Reading on your website the Xcarnation is the first of two perhaps three albums featuring yourself and Kip Winger is this true and if so when are the other albums due to be released?

True...and Still working on ... no release date yet.. only Kip's new solo album release is close and there will be 4 songs from our work...

I've described the album as industrial neo prog, how would you describe it ? Do like the prog tag or do you feel it dates the music ?

it wasn’t meant to be a typical progressive rock or  hard rock  or industrial it's hard to name it.. I never tried to name it while working on it...the key point is reincarnation that's why there are lots of different species in the whole album....  if you really want to categorize it call it XnRoll :-)

The great strength of the album is its variation, what are your favourite tracks and why ?

Personal Antichrist and Everlasting… P.A is the last song I wrote for the album and I love the message and the result of the production.. Everlasting is a very personal song.. I wrote that one in my darkest hour

Everlasting :

This is the song which brought the record deal .. It was a dark period when I wrote it.. family problems.. I never planned on anything on the whole composition.. it came out so naturally almost in one piece..I got the vocal recording on the 2nd take and there are no editings.. it was magical to capture the real emotion..It tells about a relationship, a love story from two different points of view.. the only mutual feeling for both parties is that it's "everlasting"; everlasting pain for one person and everlasting love for the other... this song was brought about by profound anger - desperation  and frustration and composing it helped me cleanse my heart of those ghosts. I am really proud of this one...

Personal Antichrist :

I was walking around in a mall one day and suddenly the chorus melody + the gtr riff popped in my mind.. recorded it to my cellphone. That idea rested there until I needed to finish the album..  This song has gone through several incarnations . The first version was more straight rock with great lyrics but rhythmically wrong and it wasn't good for the vocal performance.. I re-wrote the lyrics and tweaked the melody which created a space for the verse ..That way, I could add the right emotion... I needed a song like this to nail the whole album down.. I really love the result on this one.. especially as an opener...The song tells how we are killing ourselves... the sound is aggressive .. like the way we treat ourselves

Lyrics are the cure ...  I love the concept and the lyrics concept .

What is the creative process between yourself and Kip is it a case ofhe writes the music and you write the lyrics or the other way round or something completely different ?

Normally I write the music mostly, later he adds the lyrics.. sometimes I re-arrange his music or the other way he is my soul twin.. he is the best partner I have ever had..

Who plays what on the album do you handle all the lead vocals ? If so I'm very impressed!

Thanks !.. Yes I do sing all the songs in the album..only on "Reason To Believe" we did a duet with Kip ,

Rod Morgenstein played drums on " Desperately Sad", Pat Mastelotto played drums on " Everlasting", Reb Beach shared the guitar solo with me on " Take A Deep Breath" and Kip was on background vocals on " Willing To Wait" and a little bit on "Everlasting" as well asthe duet with me on "Reason To Believe" My wife Ebru (Bank) Eroglu played bass on many songs..  the rest is me...

I noticed that Frontiers only distribute the album, who is your record label and do you feel that Frontiers are the best label for your album as it is not in their normal style ?

Dude !  :-) thanx for this question !

My record label is MuseWrapped records not Frontiers .. in many places it has been a little bit confusing for people to categorize this album.. just because  the name Frontiers , some people expect a AOR or melodic rock music from Xcarnation..  There are some reviews where my album is criticized from a melodic rock point of view When you consider the album from that perspective, Grounded is a dog in a cat land. Imagine a Nine Inch Nails type of music web site reviewing Journey’s album… that would be wrong..isn't it ? For example www.melodicrock.com wrote a review like that . the web site name is melodic rock and my album is not Melodic rock :-)

I’ve got more than 30 album reviews so far and  80% of them understands the league well and the average rate is 80/100 which is great but the other 20% of the reviews are around 50-60/100 and those are from the AOR guys…

Anyway I love Frontiers, they are really professional and really supportive. that's not their fault ...probably they are also willing to be in the new rock scene too.. caused they also loved the album n working hard on it and I do appreciate it !

Finally the HardRockHouse standard question;- is there anything else you would like to say to the readers of the website ?

Yes ! I want reviews from the regular music listeners... I need to hear their opinions too... Bring it on ! to Xcarnation@cenkeroglu.com

Many thanks to Cenk for taking the time to speak with HardRockHouse and answer our questions Xcarnation's album 'Grounded' is out now via Frontiers Records and you can check out the HardRockHouse review via this link

Interview by Renald Mienert : XCarnation

1.    Sorry, but I don’t know a lot of things about your history as an artist, band, so tell me please first something about this!

I released 2 solo albums in 1991 & 1996 also produced and arranged many albums

here in Turkey .. After I met Pat Mastelotto I made my contribution to the King Crimson Project 4 in 1999.

In the year 2000 I composed music for Electronic Arts & Origin for computer games...

and in 2001 I made an album with Pat Mastelotto, Trey Gunn , Robert Fripp , Tony Levin ,

Bill Munyon called BPMM.

2.    How doest it came to this project?

As a serious music fan I’d been searching for a new band with a unique sound

for a long time..  couldn’t find what I was looking for.. at least not in one band..

one band’s sound was awesome but their melodies were not happening, the other

band’s songs were awesome but the arrangements were not original enough..

So I found myself working on that music which I had been desperately searching for..

My first connection was Pat Mastelotto and he really opened my mind ..rhythm section

was one of my biggest interests and Pat is a true genious  on that.. he was one of my

dream drummers and he was a great guide for my sound choices..

Later, I got in touch with Kip Winger; another true soulful unique musician, a song writer with an amazing voice.

People mostly know him from his 80’s band Winger but if you really wanna face the beast you should hear his solo albums..

So Kip and I started to work together for this project. However, as time passed, we realized

that we were actually working on 2-3 different  albums at the same time..

So, we decided to categorize the songs in 3 groups.. the first project is Xcarnation; actually my solo album..

the next will be Kip’s solo album and then we will release “Istanblue” to complete

this working period.. Kip is my soul twin and he is the only one with whom I feel safe

and natural in the studio.

3.    It’s not a typical Frontiers release, so how did you come in touch with the label?

Actually Muse-Wrapped records is the label. Frontiers is a distributor for Europe

Even as a distributor ,I think my album is Frontiers’ sole example for today’s music trend Frontiers is a retro 80’s label …

4.    How would you define “progressive rock”? Do you think this category fits for your music?

Categorizing music is really hard.. my album is a research in uncharted waters. I tried to

combine lots of different styles without limitations .. only tried not to be alien.

everybody can name it in a different way .. each review I had for this album from many different countries ,

cultures place it in a different category… some calls it UFO...

I don’t know, it depends from where you’re looking at it.. this is the music I would buy if I heard

5.    What about the influence of other artists to you?

Kiss was my first interest J when I was a little boy..  later Toto and Steve Lukather were a great influence on me..

I studied  Classical Music at the university. I was into lots

of different styles too.. Ethnic music was also in me as a result of being in Turkey ..

my influence evolution is like..Kiss / Def Leppard / Toto / Police / Peter Gabriel / Kip Winger

Seal /King Crimson / Prodigy /  Tool / Perfect Circle / Filter etc… ( I love Filter)

6.    How does the songwriting work for the project? What about the ethnic influences – pure chance or a kind of calculation?

While composing, it was totally like  automatic hand writing it was really instinctual

very emotional… also very calculative while producing the album…

it was like a wild animal in a lab ..I tried not to hurt it…

7.    How did you select the involved musicians?

Pat Mastelotto : He is a great mixture of Steve Copland of Police & John Bonham of

Led Zepplin… with an amazing taste + unique electronic drumming abilities..

5 years ago he was there when I started this .. and he is inside this album’s aura

in every way … and physically played drums only on “Everlasting”

Kip Winger :  Leonardo da Vinci of Rock … my soul twin.. when I heard his first solo

album he blowed my mind .. I was aware of his talent since Winger but those 2 solo

albums are real art.. and I am honored to be his friend .  A joker from outside

and an abyss of  art ‘n emotions inside.. he was not a choice.. he was the reason..

Rod Morgenstein : He played on many demos and I used one of those songs called

“Desperately Sad” in the album.. he is a killer drummer.. and did a great job on “D.S.”

Ebru Bank (Eroglu) : My wife.. and a great bass player .. she got the right taste n timing

Reb Beach : Always wanted to play together.. and we did..

The rest was the best performers of their kind and brought their soul into my music..

8.    How would you like to develop in the future? Do you think about changing your style?

Luckily I am a musician with reincarnations.. and will try to explore more areas

in the future .. everything is possible.. that’s why, the name is Xcarnation ..

9.    What do you think about the situation of your musical genre in the presence and what will change in the future?

Change is the main word for the concept of Xcarnation.. Guest musicians will change

I will try to collaborate with different artists.. and I’ll keep on hating what I did yesterday J

10.What kind of compromises would you make to push your career?

I am competing with my self  and that’s a compromise it self.. I am the most cruel critic

of my self..

11.So you could make a choice, with which band would you like to play live on stage, for example as support?

Peter Gabriel / Filter …

12.So you could have the possibility to make this record again. Would you change anything?

I wouldn’t use the song “Take A Deep Breath” I would add my new song “Crash n Burn”

instead and that would be the best song in the album…

I would love to mix the album with a  Neve desk with my bat ear friend Caglar . that would

make a huge difference ..he was not available then..

Thanks for the great questions and I hope you had what you were looking for..

Many regards

Cenk Eroglu

Xcarnation – Cenk Eroglu - BIOGRAPHY

09-March-2005
Xcarnation is finally scheduled the release of the new album ,

we'll keep you posted for the updates...

11-May-2005

For those who are wondering the structure of the album Xcarnation
here are the answers...

When Kip n' I  started to work together we wrote tons of songs without knowing
or lets say without planning which song is for which album/project...
when we wrote enough songs ( with all the little ideas included ..around 20) we realized
we have two different concepts.. 1st the heavy electronic in your face material
2nd more ethnic spiritual melodic concept..
we couldn´t use both in one album.. so the question was to say goodbye for one
of the musical direction and keep working on the chosen one.. but we had great songs
on both sides and it was like Sophie´s choice...
so I had this offer from Muse Wrapped records for the heavy songs (mostly my self
on vocals) and decided to call it Xcarnation .. so the other concept is still in progress
and we call it "Istanblue" the weird thing is all songs for both concepts are from the
same period of time and they are connected in many ways.. we even once decided to release
2 albums (double) Xcarnation "light" Xcarnation "heavy" like Coca-Cola Light / Normal
but it wasn´t feasible ...
so now what you´re going to hear from the Xcarnation album is :

Me on vocals and everything... (guitars , keys .. song writer etc )
Kip on backvocs - bass - 12 string guitars - song writer etc...
Reb Beach on one song..
Rod Morgenstein on 1 song
Pat Mastelotto on 1 songs
and other guests

For Istanblue :

Kip on vocals - bass - 12 string gtrs - songs /lyrics etc...
me on back vocs and every other instruments...
Rod Morgenstein on drums
etc...

Istanblue is still in progress so the release date is unknown but
we have KILLER songs for it and also like you heard in the medley
we re-did the monstrous version of the song "Monster"

so it´s like, this Xcarnation album is the first chapter of this working period
and Istanblue will be the second chapter.. like one story and 2 tellers...

it is still a great experience and we are still having magical moments while
writing or working together..

hope this message contains the answers for your questions...

Cenk

7/23/04 - Update from Rod

Kip Winger is putting some finishing touches on the recording I did
with him and Turkish producer/guitarist Cenk Eroglu earlier this
year, and getting ready to shop it for a deal.

3/19/03 - Update from Rod

Hi Everybody,
I just spent the last several days in Nashville recording with Kip
Winger. Over the past year, Kip has been making trips to Istanbul,
Turkey where he has been writing and recording with Turkish
artist/guitarist/producer Cenk Eroglu. The music is an incredible
blend of east-meets-west sounds and rhythms, both traditional and
high-tech. Kip and Cenk hope to finish it up in the next several
months. I'll keep you posted.

Taken From Metal Forever.com's Rod Morgenstein Interview By David Iozzia

DI: Kip Winger did a cool acoustic set during the recent Bad Boys of Metal tour. The encore was Kip sharing
vocals with Quiet Riot's Kevin Dubrow on AC-DC's "Highway To Hell." I was hoping for an electric WINGER
song like "CanÕt Get Enuff" but it didn't happen. Did you happen to attend a Bad Boys of Metal gig?

ROD: I didn't get to see Kip on that tour, but I've seen him doing his solo thing on several other occasions and
think he's the consummate performer. He's one of my favorite singers and he's really powerful doing his oneman
show. I recorded with Kip in Nashville in March of this year. He's collaborating with a Turkish
guitarist/producer Cenk Eroglu and their blend of East-meets-West rhythms, harmonies and melodies is quite
remarkable. I'm not sure where they are at in the process, but it will be well worth the wait when it finally sees
the light of day.

Taken From CrossRocks.com 's Kip Winger Interview
Question : Which do you find more gratifying – working with musicians in
the studio as a producer, or working on your own stuff?

Kip : Definitely working on my own stuff is way more gratifying.
I live for the creative process. The highest high of all highs is
when you’re actually  in the moment knowing you are in the midst
of creating something  that’s really worth creating.
Being creative as a producer is good but it’s more like being a coach
for a football team where you’re coaching them through their ability
to find their own Zen in the process.
Cenk Eroglu, Reb Beach and Peter Fletcher are the only three guys
I’ve worked with where I’ve reached that pinnacle of creativity where
I’m creating something that is above all things (for me) as far as that
moment is concerned. Usually it happens for me when I’m alone because
it is such a personal and private thing. I don’t transport there that easily with
others in the room. Usually I like to work alone.
For me working alone means being safe, the doors locked and that’s the
only time I can unlock my ultimate place because I have to know I don’t have
to answer the phone and I have a complete zone to grab what’s in the ether
and bring it back down and transform it into a material substance.
What your doing is flying out into the universe to find that thing that you’re
hearing and flying back to the planet and transforming it into a material medium
and you have to be able to leave your body in a certain way.
It is tough to find that much solitude.

Question :Regarding the Pas de Deux (In Your Eyes Another Life),
that you wrote with Cenk Eroglu, is this piece available or
will it be available for release on CD?

Kip : It was a piece done for a ballet school and it is part of our album
so it will come out on the album.

Question : I’ve also seen where you and Cenk have contributed to the
music for Harem Sultan and I had the same question about it’s release.

Kip : Cenk Eroglu really wrote all of the Harem Sultan music.
They wanted to use an old version of Free and so they used the Japanese version.
I wrote a whole new 6-8 minute arrangement of Free that I will record and release.
Most of the music for Harem Sultan though is really Cenks music.
It’s great music. You could e-mail Cenk if you want to know more about that.

An Interview With Pat Mastelotto (Taken from King Crimson's

http://www.krimson-news.com/interviews/AlkkEylpp3.shtml

Posted by MrCrimson on Thursday, February 15, 2001

Question : Who are Cenk Eroglu and Aloke Dutta, and how did you meet them?

Pat Mastelotto :
CENK-In the summer of 1998 I received an email from a young Turkish
Mr. Mister fanatic named Cenk Eroglu. Cenk -(pronounced like Jake)
offered me custom samples of Turkish instruments and loops, when they
arrived (on my birthday!) I was stunned with the quality, the package
also included some gifts and Cenk's solo CD. . As we continued to email
Cenk investagated XTC, Cock Robin and King Crimson and in one of
our many emails Cenk asked why all the Crims had solo records except
Pat? I explained I prefer collaborating and Cenk quickly said 'I'll help!
let me produce you!". So we began passing ADATs in the mail and
quickly had several songs underway, I had learned besides playing guitar
& keys that Cenk had written/produced and/or arranged several number
one records in Turkey as that progressed we realized it would be better
to meet face to face and work so. . . of I went to Istanbul. . .and later
Cenk come to Austin . . . and later me going to Antalaya in the south of
Turkey. Cenk dubbed our project "Mastel@Ottoman" and we have about
10 or 15 songs under development (at one point Cenk even had me
singing!). We want a synthesis with the right blend so this may take a
while.

Question : Why did you go to Turkey?

Pat : I went to meet Cenk and understand the culture better.

Taken From Origin's web site Ultima Online

An Interview with Starr Long about Origin's Ultima Online II music

After the success of Ultima Online it appeared obvious that a
continuation would be very advantageous. Also was launched dice 1998
the development of Ultima Online 2 of which the goal nevertheless was
to propose an alternative to UO more than to replace it. Thus where
Ultima Online proposed a traditional world similar to that to which the
Ultima precedents had accustomed us, UO2 proposed the bets to be
likely to offer a very different world, where following a terrible magic
cataclysm, Britannia which we all know was found mingled with that with
the last distance and that with the future distance.
Thus UO2 would have thus proposed an original world where the human
ones would have coexisted on the Britannia News; Meers people missing
near from nature on the prehistoric continent Avenosh; and Jukas a race
forged starting from the waste-gas mains in an alive future distance on
the continent of Logosia where exists a strange technology.
If this idea could not leave thoughtful, one can nevertheless only
recognize that the artists of Origin seemed to have done very good work,
giving a distinct style to each continent. It will be noted besides that to
differentiate even more the cultures, three type-setters had been
engaged for the music of the play. Cenk Eroglu, a famous musician had
signed the music of Avenosh in a style Eastern; Curse Mackey of the
group Grim Faeries when with him the music of Logosia in an industrial
and metal environment had signed; music of Britannia when with it was
signed by George Oldziey which took again service after its superb work
on Ultima IX.

HE RULED THE WORLD
SHE RULED HIM

The most splendid love story of Ottoman history is being revived in HURREM SULTAN performance.

On December 12th for the first time, and only for a brief period. HURREM SULTAN opens its
curtains at Mydonose Showland in Istanbul. Integrating the universal language of music and dance,
the performance includes a troupe of 60 Turkish and international dancers who have trained in drama,
modern dance, folklore, acrobatics and rhythmic gymnastics for over one year.
As well as Suleyman, the Magnificent, conqueror of territories, and HURREM SULTAN,
to whom he is devoted with a deep love, there is another character called Bostancibasi.
Bostancibasi, the Palace chief gardener and Sultans private executioner in the Ottoman Empire,
represents the cold hand of death, and he relates with passion and the use of universal deaf and mute alphabet,
their love and how their love is enjoyed. The impact of his performance heightens the interaction between
the audience and the drama on the stage.

For the first time in Turkey HURREM SULTAN audiences will be mesmerized
by the spectacular lighting design by Michael Odam.
Original music has been devised by contributions from Kip Winger and Pat Mastelotto,
the master musician of the rock group King Crimson.
This extraordinary interpretation tells of the great love story that is part of our history.
