Interview by Renald Mienert : XCarnation
1. Sorry, but I don’t know a lot of things about your history as an artist, band, so tell me please first something about this!
I released 2 solo albums in 1991 & 1996 also produced and arranged many albums here in Turkey .. After I met Pat Mastelotto I made my contribution to the King Crimson Project 4 in 1999. In the year 2000 I composed music for Electronic Arts & Origin for computer games... and in 2001 I made an album with Pat Mastelotto, Trey Gunn , Robert Fripp , Tony Levin , Bill Munyon called BPMM.
2. How doest it came to this project?
As a serious music fan I’d been searching for a new band with a unique sound for a long time.. couldn’t find what I was looking for.. at least not in one band.. one band’s sound was awesome but their melodies were not happening, the other band’s songs were awesome but the arrangements were not original enough.. So I found myself working on that music which I had been desperately searching for.. My first connection was Pat Mastelotto and he really opened my mind ..rhythm section was one of my biggest interests and Pat is a true genious on that.. he was one of my dream drummers and he was a great guide for my sound choices.. Later, I got in touch with Kip Winger; another true soulful unique musician, a song writer with an amazing voice. People mostly know him from his 80’s band Winger but if you really wanna face the beast you should hear his solo albums.. So Kip and I started to work together for this project. However, as time passed, we realized that we were actually working on 2-3 different albums at the same time.. So, we decided to categorize the songs in 3 groups.. the first project is Xcarnation; actually my solo album.. the next will be Kip’s solo album and then we will release “Istanblue” to complete this working period.. Kip is my soul twin and he is the only one with whom I feel safe and natural in the studio.
3. It’s not a typical Frontiers release, so how did you come in touch with the label?
Actually
Muse-Wrapped records is the label. Frontiers is a distributor for Even as a distributor ,I think my album is Frontiers’ sole example for today’s music trend Frontiers is a retro 80’s label …
4. How would you define “progressive rock”? Do you think this category fits for your music?
Categorizing music is really hard.. my album is a research in uncharted waters. I tried to combine lots of different styles without limitations .. only tried not to be alien. everybody can name it in a different way .. each review I had for this album from many different countries , cultures place it in a different category… some calls it UFO... I don’t know, it depends from where you’re looking at it.. this is the music I would buy if I heard
5. What about the influence of other artists to you?
Kiss was my first interest J when I was a little boy.. later Toto and Steve Lukather were a great influence on me.. I studied Classical Music at the university. I was into lots
of different
styles too.. Ethnic music was also in me as a result of being in my influence evolution is like..Kiss / Def Leppard / Toto / Police / Peter Gabriel / Kip Winger
Seal /King
Crimson / Prodigy / Tool /
6. How does the songwriting work for the project? What about the ethnic influences – pure chance or a kind of calculation?
While composing, it was totally like automatic hand writing it was really instinctual very emotional… also very calculative while producing the album… it was like a wild animal in a lab ..I tried not to hurt it…
7. How did you select the involved musicians?
Pat Mastelotto : He is a great mixture of Steve Copland of Police & John Bonham of Led Zepplin… with an amazing taste + unique electronic drumming abilities.. 5 years ago he was there when I started this .. and he is inside this album’s aura in every way … and physically played drums only on “Everlasting”
Kip Winger : Leonardo da Vinci of Rock … my soul twin.. when I heard his first solo album he blowed my mind .. I was aware of his talent since Winger but those 2 solo albums are real art.. and I am honored to be his friend . A joker from outside and an abyss of art ‘n emotions inside.. he was not a choice.. he was the reason..
Rod Morgenstein : He played on many demos and I used one of those songs called “Desperately Sad” in the album.. he is a killer drummer.. and did a great job on “D.S.”
Ebru Bank (Eroglu) : My wife.. and a great bass player .. she got the right taste n timing
The rest was the best performers of their kind and brought their soul into my music..
8. How would you like to develop in the future? Do you think about changing your style? Luckily I am a musician with reincarnations.. and will try to explore more areas in the future .. everything is possible.. that’s why, the name is Xcarnation ..
9. What do you think about the situation of your musical genre in the presence and what will change in the future?
Change is the main word for the concept of Xcarnation.. Guest musicians will change I will try to collaborate with different artists.. and I’ll keep on hating what I did yesterday J
10.What kind of compromises would you make to push your career?
I am competing with my self and that’s a compromise it self.. I am the most cruel critic of my self..
11.So you could make a choice, with which band would you like to play live on stage, for example as support?
Peter Gabriel / Filter …
12.So you could have the possibility to make this record again. Would you change anything?
I wouldn’t use the song “Take A Deep Breath” I would add my new song “Crash n Burn” instead and that would be the best song in the album… I would love to mix the album with a Neve desk with my bat ear friend Caglar . that would make a huge difference ..he was not available then..
Thanks for the great questions and I hope you had what you were looking for..
Many regards Cenk Eroglu

Question : Which do you find more gratifying – working
with musicians in
the studio as a producer, or working on your own
stuff?
Kip : Definitely working on my own stuff is way more gratifying.
I live for the creative process. The highest high of
all highs is
when you’re actually in the moment knowing you are in
the midst
of creating something that’s really worth creating.
Being creative as a producer is good but it’s more like being a coach
for a football team where you’re coaching them
through their ability
to find their own Zen in the process.
Cenk Eroglu, Reb Beach and Peter Fletcher are the only three guys
I’ve worked with where I’ve reached that pinnacle of
creativity where
I’m creating something that is above all things (for
me) as far as that
moment is concerned. Usually it happens for me when
I’m alone because
it is such a personal and private thing. I don’t
transport there that easily with
others in the room. Usually I like to work alone.
For me working alone means being safe, the doors
locked and that’s the
only time I can unlock my ultimate place because I
have to know I don’t have
to answer the phone and I have a complete zone to grab
what’s in the ether
and bring it back down and transform it into a
material substance.
What your doing is flying out into the universe to
find that thing that you’re
hearing and flying back to the planet and transforming
it into a material medium
and you have to be able to leave your body in a
certain way.
It is tough to find that much solitude.
Question :Regarding the Pas de Deux (In Your Eyes
Another Life),
that you wrote with Cenk Eroglu, is this piece
available or
will it be available for release on CD?
Kip : It was a piece done for a ballet school and it is part of our album
so it will come out on the album.
Question : I’ve also seen where you and Cenk have contributed to the
music for Harem Sultan and I had the same question
about it’s release.
Kip : Cenk Eroglu really wrote all of the Harem Sultan music.
They wanted to use an old version of Free and so
they used the Japanese version.
I wrote a whole new 6-8 minute arrangement of Free
that I will record and release.
Most of the music for Harem Sultan though is
really Cenks music.
It’s great music. You could e-mail Cenk if you
want to know more about that.

An Interview With Pat Mastelotto (Taken from King Crimson's
http://www.krimson-news.com/interviews/AlkkEylpp3.shtml
Question : Who are Cenk Eroglu and Aloke Dutta, and how did you meet them?
Pat Mastelotto :
CENK-In the summer of 1998 I received an email
from a young Turkish
Mr. Mister fanatic named Cenk Eroglu. Cenk -(pronounced like Jake) offered me custom samples of Turkish instruments and loops, when they arrived (on my birthday!) I was stunned with the quality, the package also included some gifts and Cenk's solo CD. . As we continued to email Cenk investagated XTC, Cock Robin and King Crimson and in one of our many emails Cenk asked why all the Crims had solo records except Pat? I explained I prefer collaborating and Cenk quickly said 'I'll help! let me produce you!". So we began passing ADATs in the mail and quickly had several songs underway, I had learned besides playing guitar & keys that Cenk had written/produced and/or arranged several number one records in Turkey as that progressed we realized it would be better to meet face to face and work so. . . of I went to Istanbul. . .and later Cenk come to Austin . . . and later me going to Antalaya in the south of Turkey. Cenk dubbed our project "Mastel@Ottoman" and we have about 10 or 15 songs under development (at one point Cenk even had me singing!). We want a synthesis with the right blend so this may take a while. Question : Why did you go to Turkey?

| Taken From Origin's web site Ultima Online An Interview with Starr Long about Origin's Ultima Online II music
After the success of Ultima Online it
appeared obvious that a
continuation would be very advantageous. Also
was launched dice 1998
the development of Ultima Online 2 of which
the goal nevertheless was
to propose an alternative to UO more than to
replace it. Thus where
Ultima Online proposed a traditional world
similar to that to which the
Ultima precedents had accustomed us, UO2
proposed the bets to be
likely to offer a very different world, where
following a terrible magic
cataclysm, Britannia which we all know was
found mingled with that with
the last distance and that with the future
distance.
Thus UO2 would have thus proposed an original
world where the human
ones would have coexisted on the Britannia
News; Meers people missing
near from nature on the prehistoric continent
Avenosh; and Jukas a race
forged starting from the waste-gas mains in
an alive future distance on
the continent of Logosia where exists a
strange technology.
If this idea could not leave thoughtful, one
can nevertheless only
recognize that the artists of Origin seemed
to have done very good work,
giving a distinct style to each continent. It
will be noted besides that to
differentiate even more the cultures, three
type-setters had been
engaged for the music of the play. Cenk
Eroglu, a famous musician had
signed the music of Avenosh in a style
Eastern; Curse Mackey of the
group Grim Faeries when with him the music of
Logosia in an industrial
and metal environment had signed; music of
Britannia when with it was
signed by George Oldziey which took again
service after its superb work
on Ultima IX.

Produced by: Hurrem Sultan AS.
Art Director: Ertugrul Ates Script: Ertugrul Ates - Yildiz Cankaya Music: Cenk Eroglu Choreography: Yildiz Cankaya HE RULED THE WORLD SHE RULED HIM The most splendid love story of Ottoman history is being revived in HURREM SULTAN performance. On December 12th for the first time, and only for a brief period. HURREM SULTAN opens its
curtains at Mydonose Showland in Istanbul. Integrating
the universal language of music and dance,
the performance includes a troupe of 60 Turkish and
international dancers who have trained in drama,
modern dance, folklore, acrobatics and rhythmic
gymnastics for over one year.
As well as Suleyman, the Magnificent, conqueror of
territories, and HURREM SULTAN,
to whom he is devoted with a deep love, there is
another character called Bostancibasi.
Bostancibasi, the Palace chief gardener and Sultans
private executioner in the Ottoman Empire,
represents the cold hand of death, and he relates with
passion and the use of universal deaf and mute alphabet,
their love and how their love is enjoyed. The impact
of his performance heightens the interaction between
the audience and the drama on the stage.
For the first time in Turkey HURREM SULTAN audiences will be mesmerized
by the spectacular lighting design by Michael Odam.
Original music has been devised by contributions from
Kip Winger and Pat Mastelotto,
the master musician of the rock group King Crimson.
This extraordinary interpretation tells of the great
love story that is part of our history.
